The Stranger

🎲

Novel by Camus criticized for being taught superficially in high school with questions about whether Meursault deserved death penalty rather than deeper thematic analysis.

"They had just finished reading Camus' the stranger...The students had to answer 2 questions about the book in short essay form. (Spoilers for the stranger I guess) 1) Do you think Meursault deserved the death penalty 2) Was Meursault a good person...just total superficial analysis of a book with sub"

"I picked up a copy of The Stranger because I've been meaning to read it and hadn't found a used one yet, but overall it felt like a very inauthentic place."

"That's enough for me; call me Meursault's female counterpart, I don't know. The job afforded me enough downtime to read The Stranger in two shifts."

"I had to read it as a teenager for English IB and I thought it was so bleak and depressing and I hated reading it. But I assumed I was too young and not smart / well-read enough to "get it". I revisited it recently almost 15 years later and I feel the exact same way."
